Happy Generosity Day!

Yesterday, I received an email from Global Giving about “Generosity Day.” I know it is a marketing ploy to encourage donations through a rebrand of Valentine’s Day but, frankly, I agree with it. I love flowers and chocolate — hello, I’m a girl! — but flowers die and chocolates have lots of sugar, something I try to avoid. And going out to dinner on Valentine’s Day is a zoo. So, this year Brian and I are choosing to spread the love by participating in Generosity Day.

The official Causes website says this about Generosity Day:

“We’re rebooting Valentine’s Day as Generosity Day: one day of sharing love with everyone, of being generous to everyone, to see how it feels and to practice saying “Yes.” Let’s make the day about love, action and human connection – because we can do better than smarmy greeting cards, overpriced roses, and stressed-out couples trying to create romantic meals on the fly.”

It also provides suggestions for getting involved, including giving to a worthy cause (perhaps through Kiva or Global Giving), being extra generous in tipping, volunteering with a local organization or sharing some love with your friends, family or strangers. I think Generosity Day goes hand-in-hand with Admire Week, which I posted about last week and which is still ongoing in my world.

So, how are you going to participate in Generosity Day? I’ll tell you how Brian and I celebrated later.

Update February 15, 2012: How was your Generosity/Valentine’s Day? Ours was low-key but nice. In lieu of expensive dinners out or gifts, Brian and I each donated to a charity in honor of the other through Global Giving. I directed his gift to top-25 NGO Merlin for emergency nutrition and health care in East Africa, and he gave to Daraja Academy for Exceptional Kenyan Girls on my behalf. Ahhh, doesn’t it feel nice to serve others?

Oh, and although Brian usually works until 11:30 at night — he’s at a startup — he came home a couple of hours early yesterday for movie night. :-)
